What does it mean to be “walking in the Spirit”? I am sure that extremely charismatic churches come to mind, with people dancing in the isles, screaming in tongues and falling over from healing. That is NOT what I am talking about. The best example that I have found in the Bible for walking in the Spirit would be Paul (Saul). The man didn’t start his life out following Christ, he actually started his life out condemning Christians. I mean He was the one holding everyone’s coats while they were stoning Stephen for crying out loud. Acts 7:57-59. Yet Christ had much bigger plans for his life and opened his eyes… quite literally. My point with using Paul as the example is that his life was a total turn around from who he was to who he became. That is the way our lives should look…TOTALLY DIFFERENT. This isn’t easy and we as fleshly humans aren’t always going to be perfect, I am sure there were times after Paul came to the Lord that he struggled and doubted, he wasn’t Christ, he was a sinner. (Romans 3:23)
I am not going to sit here and say that I am the poster child for living/walking in the Spirit. I came into my own relationship with Christ when I was 19 and not much changed, the only difference was that while I was doing what I was doing I was trying to “save” the people I was in the mess with. Now let me tell you…not the way to go. Even now I am dealing with fleshly desires that take over and keep a hold on me, all because I am not striving to live being filled with the Holy Spirit. Ephesians 5:18 commands that we be filled with the Spirit; and this is something that we need ask for daily, coming to God, repenting, asking for forgiveness and then asking for that filling. The filling of the Spirit is also different for everyone. I know people who speak in tongues (that is a topic that I have had to pray HARD ON) and I know people who pray for healing and the healing happens. For me it is totally different, I know that when I am praying in the Spirit I start yelling my prayers. Now if you know me then you will know I yell everything anyways…well my prayers get louder, it is something I have noticed lately and I love that. Those prayers and that time in the Spirit are the most amazing, now to take that passion and put it into doing something for the world. If you read Kisses from Katie you will see the works of the Holy Spirit over and over again. But the truth of the matter is this, if you are living in and walking in the Spirit then your fruits will show it and that is what matters.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Galatians 5:22-25
Let me know your thoughts on walking in the Spirit/being filled with the Spirit and how your walk with the Lord has changed as you build on that relationship in a different way.
